Police arrested a hacker who triggered a DDoS attack on the 911 emergency call system
An Arizona man was arrested this past week after he triggered a
distributed denial-of-service attack on the 911 emergency call system.
Meetkumar Hiteshbhai Desai allegedly owned a blog and YouTube channel
that detailed the vulnerabilities that he discovered. Last week, he
allegedly tweeted a java script exploit that triggered phones and
tablets to continuously call 911.
More than 1,000 people clicked on the the exploit and flooded emergency call centers around the country with more than 100 calls over a few minutes. Desai reportedly told the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department that his friend discovered the vulnerability and that he tweaked the bug to trigger pop-ups, open emails, and to activate phone dialing. He said he was just trying to be "funny."
Desai said he might have accidentally tweeted out the link to one version of the exploit that called 911, but that wasn’t his intention. He also told police he only played around with the bug to gain recognition in the online programmer community. He is being charged with three counts of Computer Tampering and had a few of his devices seized.
