The Facebook ‘Status Update’ Problem

Facebook is suffering a system outage Monday morning that is preventing people from posting status updates.  In the Philippine it start at night.

It’s unclear how widespread the issue is, how long it has gone on, and whether it is affecting just the website or apps, too, but rest assured it isn’t just happening to you. Several people were hit with this error message when trying to update their statuses: “There was a problem updating your status. Please try again in a few minutes.”

Facebook’s website served up the error. When using the iPhone app, a status message appeared to go through — no error message — but ultimately it never published. By 10:30 a.m. ET, it appeared access was being restored — hence the “test” status updated you’re probably seeing in your newsfeed.
Facebook didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

System outages aren’t common but they aren’t unheard of either. Companies like Facebook and Twitter experience disruptions from time to time, often because some service or a server is knocked offline.
In Facebook’s case, the issue is because of the sheer number of users at any one time. In some cases, like when a company provides services for many others, the disruption can be large. That’s the case when Amazon Web Services suffers an outage.
