Smart and Globe unveil iPhone 5 in Phillipines

Tonight Smart unveil their iPhone5  in midnight rush...
Both telcos offer the 16GB version of the iPhone 5 without initial cash-out starting at Plan 2499, but Smart has also waived the device fee for the 32GB model on the same postpaid plan while Globe requires a P4,800 upfront payment for the same configuration.

Plan 999 with monthly amortization of P999 for 24 months for the 16GB model is available from Smart, which includes 40 free voice call minutes, 100 free text messages, and unlimited data consumption. Globe, on the other hand, requires an initial cash out of P19,200 for Plan 999, which can be paid for using credit card in installments of 3, 6, 12, or 24 months. This means subscribers can avail of the phone for just P800 for 24 months.
If you don’t want to lock yourself into a postpaid contract for two years, prepaid packages are available via the two telcos as well: with Smart, a 16GB model costs P33,600, while a 32GB and 64GB version retails for P38,780 and P43,950, respectively.

Prepaid packages are a bit more expensive with Globe at P35,400 for the 16GB unit, P40,800 for the 32GB model, and P46,300 for the 64GB version.

Full iPhone 5 pricing from Smart can be seen at their pre-order page, while Globe has put up its dedicated iPhone 5 page here.

Conspicuously absent: LTE
While both telcos have released their pricing plans for the iPhone 5 earlier than expected, a key factor for the purchase of Apple’s new smartphone seems conspicuously absent, as there are no LTE pricing plans announced along with the regular iPhone plans.

Launched in mid-September, the iPhone 5 is the first phone from Apple that features LTE connectivity, which means mobile Internet from the device could theoretically reach up to 100 Mbps speeds.

According to a Twitter exchange with Smart’s Abbie Real, the telco would be releasing two LTE Data Plans today: Plan 1500 and Plan 2000. These plans, however, will not be applicable to the iPhone 5 yet, and Real did not disclose if the LTE plans for the iPhone 5 will be released and available upon launch.

Globe, on the other hand, has also announced the upcoming availability of their mobile LTE plans over the weekend, but will only be available for the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE. The Ayala-led telco was also mum about LTE service availability for the iPhone 5 upon launch.

In the Philippines, only Smart has rolled out commercial availability of their LTE service, while Globe has said that its LTE mobile network will be fired up by the last quarter of the year.
